The winter months take its toll on your car, especially ones which are left un-serviced and un-maintained throughout the year. Here’s a useful guide to making sure you’re able to keep driving through the winter months whilst staying safe at the same time.
Winter Checks
Battery
Batteries are one of the top reasons for breakdowns. The cold temperature saps the life out from the battery and if it’s charge level is low or not able to hold its charge anyway, then the cold weather will cause you more problems. You may find there is a problem with your alternator not charging your battery correctly; either way get it checked by your local garage.
Tyres
Check your tyre pressures are correct and ensure you have good tread depth and as recommended by the manufacturer. Winter tyres may be an option, but good normal road tyres will be just fine.
Lights
With visibility poor during the winter months make sure your lights are all working. Not only can this put you, but also other road users at risk. Ask a friend to help when making these checks.
Antifreeze
Check the engine coolant level and if your car’s due a service, get the coolant refreshed with new antifreeze with the recommended mix ratio (see your owners handbook).
Screen wash
Make sure your screen wash is topped up. Nothing is worse than running out and having to peep through a clear patch in your screen. Screen washes come with an antifreeze mix so shouldn’t freeze either in those freezing conditions.
Extra advice
Keep in your car a good window scraper for those freezing winter mornings! It’s also a good idea to carry warm clothing, just in case you do end up breaking down. If that should ever happen, make sure your breakdown cover is up-to-date.
